Special Safety Notice
From the Diocesan Emergency Coordinator:
I am sure that everyone knows to be careful driving during freezing weather times for Houston. But there are other dangers as well. Space heaters being placed or used inappropriately, extension cords being overloaded, water pipe freezing, auto/truck engines freezing up. I have lived in the snow belt for many years so let me share some tips.
  • 50/50 mix of antifreeze in auto radiators anything less will not due. A 9 degree temp and a little wind could have a wind chill effect of zero!
  • Keep starting your car, batteries die in cold weather. If the electric goes out and you do not have a fireplace a warm car may be the last resort.
  • Diesel fuel can turn to gel without an additive
  • inside water lines constructed near outside walls can freeze almost as fast as outside lines. Open cabinet doors to let warm air in under sinks and let water drip from the faucet overnight.
  • Outside water lines and hose bibs need to be covered and/or let water drip.
  • Chk all windows and doors for small openings.
  • At very low temp frostbite can happen, don't wear shorts to the grocery store, wear gloves (emergency humor)

CERC's stay in touch with your membership to see if they need any help, both preparing and during. If someone is in need, the Council needs to help them out.
Good Speed!

40 Cans for Lent
As we approach the season of Lent, we need to consider one of our customary projects, 40 can for Lent.
Recently, we concluded the 2020 project during advent as it was cut short during Lent by the COVID lockdown. We were however faced with a logistics issue of getting the donated items over to the Mamie George center promptly each week, due to them having a shortage of personnel as well as increased distribution demand, also due to the COVID situation.
At Lent, we are called to offer prayers, fasting and alms-giving. The 40 Cans for Lent has been a great opportunity for alms-giving by our parishioners and I would love to see it continue.

For a successful project, we need to have a project leader/chair, who would coordinate volunteers for collection, ensure that the collections are promptly delivered (we have to take it to Mamie George), update the collection tracker (thermometer bulb) and track service hours of youth volunteers who have already shown interest in helping.

Brother David Hobson has offered to help with 7:30am mass on Sunday and to ferry the collections to CRS on Monday. We need volunteers for all other Sunday (and Saturday Vigil) masses. I will not present this to the parish priest for approval until we have full coverage as we need to avoid the pile ups that happened during advent.

Into the Breach
Inspired by the Apostolic Exhortation for Catholic men written by Bishop Olmsted of Phoenix, the Knights of Columbus produced a video series which seeks to answer the question of what it means to be a man and how to live as a man in today's world.
